If you haven’t made a teddy bear before, this pattern by talented designer Michele Wilcox is a fabulous place to start. The process of crocheting this bear is an education in itself. You will learn a lot about crochet while making this beginner project, and the delightfully hugable bear will put a smile on your face. No children? No grandchildren? No worries! Size:                 16 inches tall

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn: 7 ounces antique gold
Size H/8/5mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
2 yards black #3 pearl cotton
30 inches 1 1/4-inch-wide wire-edged off-white ribbon
Fiberfill
Tapestry needle.

Tension:

7 sc = 1 inch; 7 sc rnds = 1 inch
Check Tension to save time.

Pattern Notes :

Weave in loose ends as work progresses.
Do not join rnds unless otherwise indicated; use a scrap of CC yarn to mark rnds.

Head:

Rnd 1:    Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)

Rnd 2:     2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3:     Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 4:     [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] rep around. (18 sc)

Rnd 5:     Rep Rnd 3.

Rnd 6:     [Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] rep around. (24 sc)

Rnds 7-9:  Rep Rnd 3.

Rnd 10:     Rep Rnd 4. (36 sc)

Rnds 11-13:   Rep Rnd 3.

Rnd 14:     [Sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times, sc in each of next 12 sc. (42 sc)

Rnds 15-21:    Rep Rnd 3.

Rnd 22:     [Sc in each of next 5 sc, dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] rep around. (36 sc)

Rnd 23:     [Sc in each of next 4 sc, dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] rep around. (30 sc)

Rnd 24:     [Sc in each of next 3 sc, dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] rep around. (24 sc)

Rnd 25:     [Sc in each of next 2 sc, dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] rep around. (18 sc)

Stuff head with fiberfill and continue to stuff as work progresses.

Rnd 26:     [Sc in next sc, dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] rep around. (12 sc)

Rnd 27:     [Dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] rep around, sl st in next st, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off. (6 sc)

Weave rem length through sts, pull to close opening, secure.

Ear (make 2):

Rnds 1-4:     Rep Rnds 1-4 of head. (18 sc)

Rnds 5 & 6:    Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 7:      [Sc in each of next 7 sc, dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] twice, sl st in next st, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off. (16 sc)

Do not stuff ears.

Fold Rnd 7 flat across, sew across gathering slightly; leaving a 2-inch sp between ears, sew to Rnd 17 of head.

Facial features:

Embroider facial features with black pearl cotton. Embroider satin stitch nose over Rnd 1 of head, embroider a straight stitch directly below nose between Rnds 2 and 3 and mouth between Rnds 2 and 3 out 2 sts to each side of straight stitch. Embroider eyes with straight stitches over Rnd 13 of head.

Body:

Rnd 1:     Beg at bottom of body, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)

Rnd 2:     2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3:     [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] rep around. (18 sc)

Rnd 4:     [Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] rep around. (24 sc)

Rnd 5:     [Sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] rep around. (30 sc)

Rnd 6:     [Sc in each of next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc] rep around. (36 sc)

Rnd 7:     [Sc in each of next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc] rep around. (42 sc)

Rnd 8:     Sc in each sc around.

Rnds 9-14:    Rep Rnd 8.

Rnd 15:     [Sc in each of next 5 sc, dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] rep around. (36 sc)

Rnds 16-28:    Rep Rnd 8.

Rnd 29:     [Sc in each of next 4 sc, dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] rep around. (30 sc)

Rnds 30 & 31:    Rep Rnd 8.

Rnd 32:     [Sc in each of next 3 sc, dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] rep around. (24 sc)

Rnd 33:     [Sc in each of next 2 sc, dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] rep around, sl st in next st, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off. (18 sc)

Stuff body with fiberfill; sew head to top of body.

Arm (make 2):

Rnds 1-4:       Rep Rnds 1-4 of head. (18 sc)

Rnds 5-26:     Sc in each sc around. Stuff arm with fiberfill.

Rnd 27:     [Sc in next sc, dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] rep around. (12 sc)

Rnd 28:     [Dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] rep around, sl st in next st, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off. (6 sc)

Weave rem length through rem sts, pull to close opening, secure.

With tapestry needle and length of antique gold, [insert needle through center of arm between Rnds 23 and 24, and then pass needle around 1 st at side of body on Rnd 30, pass needle back out through arm between Rnds 23 and 24] 7 times to secure arm; do not pull sts tightly, allow arm to move freely in up-and-down motion, knot ends tog, weave into arm, fasten off rem length.

Leg (make 2):

Rnd 1:     Ch 12, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 9 chs, 3 sc in next ch (toe), working on opposite side of foundation ch, sc in each of next 9 chs, 2 sc in last ch. (24 sc)

Rnd 2:     2 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 9 sc, [2 sc in next sc] 3 times, sc in each of next 9 sc, [2 sc in next sc] twice. (30 sc)

Rnd 3:     Sc in each sc around.

Rnds 4-7:    Rep Rnd 3.

Rnd 8:     Sc in each of next 9 sc, [dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] 6 times, sc in each of next 9 sc. (24 sc)

Rnd 9:     Sc in each of next 5 sc, [dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] 6 times, sc in each of next 7 sc. (18 sc)

Rnds 10-26:    Rep Rnd 3. At the end of Rnd 26, stuff leg with fiberfill.

Rnd 27:     [Sc in next sc, dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] rep around. (12 sc)

Rnd 28:     [Dec 1 sc over next 2 sc] rep around, sl st in next sc, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off. (6 sc)

Weave rem length through rem sts, pull to close opening, secure.

With tapestry needle and length of antique gold, [insert needle through center of leg between Rnds 23 and 24, then pass needle around 1 st at side of body on Rnd 12, pass needle back out through leg between Rnds 23 and 24] 7 times to secure leg; do not pull sts tightly, allow leg to move freely to be placed in sitting position, knot ends tog, weave into leg, fasten off rem length.

Finishing:

Place ribbon around neckline, tie ends in a bow. Trim ends at a slight angle.
